Security document comprising a paper document substrate (11) and a security element (2) embedded in said document substrate (11), the security element comprising an element substrate (21). The element substrate (21) is provided with a portion of conductive material forming a metamaterial (31, 32) arranged to provide for authentication of the security document. The element substrate (21) is a substrate in the form of a cellulose strip or patch.
