The invention relates to a new packaging material having a starch-based barrier coating, which packaging material is characterized in that the barrier coating comprises 30 to 90 wt% of starch after a possibly present filler component has been deducted, wherein at least 20% of the starch has an average molecular weight of at least 500,000 g/mol, preferably at least 1,000,000 g/mol, and at least 20 wt% of the starch in the barrier coating is in the form of gelatinized starch particles. A fraction of 0 to 70 wt% of plasticizer in the barrier coating and a weight per unit area in the range of 3 to 80 g/m
2 , especially preferably between 12 and 40 g/m
2 , allow for the creation of a mechanically stable barrier coating, which, for example on the inside of cardboard packagings, effectively prevents the diffusion of non-polar hydrocarbons and hydrocarbon derivatives and thus protects the packaged foods against contamination. The new packaging material is simple and economical to produce at high process speeds and has the additional advantage that the new packaging material can be recycled without limitation and meets possible legal requirements related to foods.
