The invention relates to a method for diagnosing (200) a nitrogen oxide trap associated with an internal combustion engine (4), said trap being suitable for breaking down the nitrogen oxides stored inside of same by reaction with reducing agents, during a step of regeneration (120, 130) of the trap caused by the engine switching to rich-mixture running mode, said method including: a step of determining the weight of reducing agents consumed during a regeneration step; a step of comparing said weight with a fault threshold below which the trap is determined to be faulty; and a step of emitting a signal indicating the fault state of the trap, characterised in that the weight of reducing agents is determined during a special regeneration step (130) carried out for diagnosis purposes at a second running richness value (R2) of the engine (4) which is higher than a first running richness value (R1) of an ordinary regeneration step (120) of the trap.
