The present invention relates to a modified polysaccharide obtainable by a process comprising the step of treating a polysaccharide with gaseous or liquid SO
2 , a laundry detergent composition comprising said modified polysaccharide, the use of said modified polysaccharide to increase whiteness of a washed fabric, the use of said modified polysaccharide as anti-greying agent in aqueous laundry processes, the use of said modified polysaccharide as a rheology modifier for homecare applications and the use of said modified polysaccharide in the manufacture of a liquid laundry composition. Further aspects of the invention are a method for preparing a laundry detergent composition comprising said modified polysaccharide.
