The invention relates to a filter element (14) having a filter medium (22). The filter element (14) can be connected to a filter housing of a filter via at least one bayonet-type protrusion (52) of the filter element (14). The bayonet-type protrusion (52) projects radially, i.e. perpendicular to the central longitudinal axis of the filter element (14), beyond the filter medium (22). In addition, the free end (94) of the bayonet-type protrusion (52) points in the direction of the central filter element longitudinal axis (60). The formation of the bayonet-type protrusion (52) according to the invention generates a large free installation space in the region of the bayonet-type protrusion (52), and prevents injuries given that the free end of the bayonet-type protrusion (52) projects radially inwards.
