Various embodiments herein each include at least one of systems, methods, devices, barcode scanners (108), and software for variable depth of field scanning devices and methods. One such embodiment includes determining a distance from a known point to an item presented for scanning by a barcode scanner (602). This embodiment further includes adjusting a variable lens of a camera of the barcode scanner to a depth of field based on the determined distance (604).
