A method and apparatus are described for supporting proximity services and performing device-to-device (D2D) communications. A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) comprises a transceiver configured to send, to an evolved Node B (eNB), an attach request message including D2D capability information of the WTRU, wherein the D2D capability information of the WTRU includes at least a D2D direct communication capability indication and a D2D relay capability indication; and the transceiver configured to receive, from the eNB, an attach accept message.
