A method of preventing spallation for a geometrically segmented thermally insulating top coat (54) on an article (30), the method comprising forming a surface feature (52, 152) in a surface (68) of the article (30), forming a crack deflection feature (66) in the surface (68) proximate the surface feature (52, 152), disposing the thermally insulating topcoat (54) over the surface feature (52, 152), and forming segmented portions (56a-e) that are separated by faults (58) extending through the thermally insulating topcoat (54) from the surface feature (52, 152).
