An agricultural implement system (100) includes an agricultural implement (120) including: a chassis (121); a pickup (126) carried by the chassis (121) and configured to rotate and convey crop material; and a movable windguard (140) carried by the chassis (121). A windguard displacement sensor (143) is associated with the windguard (140) and configured to output windguard displacement signals corresponding to a displacement of the windguard (140) relative to a zero position and a controller (116, 151) is operably coupled to the windguard displacement sensor (143). The controller (116, 151) is configured to determine a plug condition exists when the displacement of the windguard (140) exceeds a defined displacement (α); and output at least one plug condition mitigation signal to adjust at least one parameter of the agricultural implement system (100) and mitigate the plug condition responsively to determining the plug condition exists.
