摘要：
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an acid- and bile salt-resistant Lactobacillus isolate having the ability to lower cholesterol. SOLUTION: The Lactobacillus isolate (Lactobacillus gasseri) is obtained from feces of infants as an origin and resistant to gastric fluid and bile acid and provides excellent cholesterol degradation. The isolate exhibits the high ability to lower cholesterol as compared with that of L. acidophilus ATCC (American Type Culture Collection) 43121, ATCC 4356 and DDS-1. A subcultured offspring of the isolate or a mutant derived therefrom can be used in the preparation of various foods and production of medicaments for treatment and prophylaxis of gastrointestinal diseases and lowering of the serum cholesterol.
