PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately detect a hydrogen concentration by using a small and inexpensive sensor.
SOLUTION: A fuel reforming catalyst 28 generates a reformed gas containing hydrogen by coming in contact with exhaust gas containing a fuel to be reformed. The upstream side and the downstream side of the catalyst 28 are provided with A/F (air-fuel) sensors 58, 60. The A/F sensor 58 on the upstream side outputs an upstream sensor signal corresponding to the oxygen concentration. The A/F sensor 60 on the downstream side outputs a downstream sensor signal according to the oxygen concentration and hydrogen concentration by using oxygen detection ability of zirconia and to changes in the oxygen detection ability corresponding to the hydrogen concentration in a diffusion layer. An ECU (electronic control unit) 50 detects hydrogen concentration without being affected by the oxygen concentration by using the upstream sensor signal that reflects only the oxygen concentration and the downstream sensor signal that reflects oxygen concentration and hydrogen concentration. Thereby, a detection system for a hydrogen concentration is obtained by using common A/F sensors 58, 60.
