PURPOSE: An apparatus for automatically connecting the optical fibers is provided to accurately connect the optical fibers of matrix array to each other at the intersection thereof, and to simply perform the connection switching. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for automatically connecting the optical fibers consists of a guide lump(20), a horizontal mover(30), and a vertical mover(40). The guide lump has many inserting groove uniformly arranged in a horizontal direction and a vertical direction. The horizontal mover and the vertical mover are disposed opposite to each other with interpose the guide lump between them. An optical fiber mover(32) is shifted to the horizontal direction in the horizontal mover, and an optical fiber mover(42) is shifted to the vertical direction in the vertical mover. A driving means(50;201-222) drives the horizontal mover to a certain point in the horizontal direction for connecting with the opposite optical fiber. A driving means(60) drives the vertical mover to a certain point in the vertical direction for connecting with the opposite optical fiber. In this way, the optical fibers are disposed in a matrix array, and are automatically moved toward to each other by the vertical mover and the horizontal mover for the accurate connection.
