A method for wireless communication includes identifying a frame structure for transmissions using an unlicensed radio frequency spectrum band, the frame structure including at least two special subframes; and performing a procedure to gain access to the unlicensed radio frequency spectrum band during at least a portion of at least one of the at least two special subframes.
