The display apparatus includes: an image inputter configured to receive an image; a display panel comprising a plurality of pixels; a panel driver configured to drive the plurality of pixels of the display panel on a pixel basis to display the image; and a processor configured to divide the image into a plurality of areas based on a grayscale characteristic of the image, and control the panel driver to individually adjust brightness of at least one of the plurality of areas.
