An intelligent agent system including a terminal device and a control method therefor are disclosed. The terminal device includes: a display unit configured to display a contact list, a communication unit configured to request and receive state information of a user selected from the contact list and a control unit configured to control the communication unit to request and receive the state information in response to the selection of the user, wherein the control unit is configured to extract at least one of a plurality of methods available for connecting to the selected user based on the received state information, to control the display unit to display the extracted at least one connection method, to select one of the extracted connection method based on a predetermined criteria, and to control the communication unit to connect the selected user using the selected connection method.
