In an electronic device and a method for operation of the electronic device according to various embodiments, the electronic device may comprise: a communication module for transmitting/receiving data to or from an external electronic device; a display; a memory in which to store commands to execute on the external electronic device a function mapped onto a user input and state information of the external electronic device; and a processor, wherein the processor is configured to: control the communication module to establish a connection to the external electronic device; receive first state information of the external electronic device from the external electronic device; receive a first user input to a certain area of the display; select a first command corresponding to characteristics of the first user input and the first state information from the commands stored in the memory; and control the external electronic device such that a function corresponding to the first command is executed.
