A method of displaying an image with a light modulator on a display device having a timing rate requirement includes image data for the image received at an input timing rate. A frame of the image is created from the image data and a resolution of the image data is matched to a resolution of the light modulator. A first sub-frame and at least a second sub-frame are defined for the frame of the image. The input timing rate of the received image data is converted to the timing rate requirement of the display device. The first sub-frame and the second sub-frame are displayed with the light modulator and the light modulator is shifted to shift display of the second sub-frame
