If a dielectric constant in a direction parallel to a long axis of liquid crystals is defined as a horizontal dielectric constant ε∥, a dielectric constant in a direction perpendicular to the long axis of the liquid crystals is defined as a vertical dielectric constant ε⊥, and the difference between the vertical dielectric constant ε⊥ and the horizontal dielectric constant ε∥ is defined as dielectric anisotropy Δε, then a ratio Δε/ε⊥ of the dielectric anisotropy Δε to the vertical dielectric constant ε⊥ of the liquid crystal composition is 0.5 or less.
