An image forming apparatus includes a developing device for developing a latent image formed on an image bearing member into a developer image; a transferring device for transferring the developer image from the image bearing member onto a transfer material; a temperature detecting device, disposed in a main assembly of the image forming apparatus, for detecting a temperature; and a controller for controlling a forced consumption operation in which toner is forcedly consumed by the developing device without transferring the developer image from the image bearing member onto the transfer material. The controller is capable of controlling the forced consumption operation so that a frequency of the forced consumption operation or an amount of toner consumption per one forced consumption operation when the temperature detected by the temperature detecting device is higher than a predetermined temperature is more than that when the temperature detected by the temperature detecting device is lower than the predetermined temperature.
