A voltage is applied to an electrode positioned in contact with a piezoelectric layer, the electrode having a surface area. A deflection of the piezoelectric layer is measured in response to the applied voltage. The surface area of the electrode is reduced based at least in part on the measured deflection. Reducing the surface area of the electrode reduces the actuated area of the piezoelectric layer.
