Various methods of promoting responsible gaming are disclosed herein. According to one method, a communication unit is connected to each gaming device for providing communication between the gaming devices and a back-end server over a communication network and with networks providing one or more of Internet or cellular phone communication. Play at the gaming device is monitored and when a responsible message trigger condition occurs, a message is sent over one more of the cellular telephone or Internet communication networks to one or more recipients. The unit may be enabled to receive input from a player's cellular telephone or PDA.
