An image forming apparatus is configured to be able to switch a target temperature of an image heating member from a standby target temperature during a standby state in which a pressurizing member is separated from the image heating member to a first target temperature or a second target temperature which is lower than the standby and first target temperatures. The image forming apparatus controls a contacting/separating mechanism such that a time from when an image forming signal is input until when the pressurizing member in the standby state contacts the image heating member and forms a nip is shorter in a case when the target temperature of the image heating member is the second target temperature than in a case when the target temperature of the image heating member is the first target temperature.
