Provided is a positive electrode active material for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery in which generation of gas resulting from a reaction between a lithium transition metal complex oxide and an electrolyte is suppressed even when the battery is stored at high temperature, thereby improving the reliability of the battery, suppressing deterioration of the lithium transition metal complex oxide, and suppressing the decrease in battery capacity. In the positive electrode active material, a compound containing zirconium and fluorine is attached to a surface of lithium cobaltate. This positive electrode active material can be produced by spraying a solution containing zirconium and fluorine onto lithium cobaltate while stirring lithium cobaltate.
