Provided herein are formulations and methods for treating pain in human beings. Also provided are optimal ratios at which an opioid and an opioid antagonist may be combined for administration to humans such that the opioid activity is inhibited. These ratios may also be used to formulate compositions containing both an opioid and an opioid antagonist within a single pharmaceutical dosing unit.
