A door closer and assist system that utilizes a door closer and door assist that aids in reducing the force required to open the door and/or increasing the force for closing the door. The door closer may be installed along with the door assist, or the door assist may be installed to any door closer that is already installed to a door. The door assist may include a track and a drive assembly having a motor assembly, a carriage, and a drive shaft. The motor assembly may have a drive train, a motor, and a controller. One or more sensors may be used to determine when to activate the motor to aid in opening and/or closing the door. The door closer and assist system allows for a door to be closed with a force that is greater than or equal to the force required to open the door.
