A housing forms a sealed sensor compartment receiving an insertable portion of the analyte sensor. The sealed sensor compartment comprises a detachable upper cap and a detachable lower cap. The detachable lower cap is configured for detachment before sensor insertion. The cannula is attached to the detachable upper cap, wherein the detachable upper cap is configured for detachment after insertion, thereby removing the insertion cannula.
