Methods and systems for acoustic sensing include determining sensing locations along a fiber to generate a beam pattern that is directed to an acoustic source. An optical pulse is transmitted on the fiber. Optical phase of backscattering light is measured from the sensing locations on the fiber. An output signal is generated by combining the measured optical phase according to the beam pattern.
