A process for detecting the presence of free oxygen and oxides of sulfur and nitrogen in a gaseous stream which comprises contacting the reaction product of the reduction of an organo-transition metal compound with a metal hydride or an alkyl, the reduction compound containing the transition metal in lower valence state, with the oxygen-containing gas to produce a color change in the reaction product.
