Polyesters containing carbonate groups and consisting of repeating structural units corresponding to the general formula ##STR1## in which X is the residue of a reaction product of a polyhydric alcohol with a polybasic aliphatic carboxylic acid having a molecular weight of from 800 to 3500,X' has the same meaning as X or represents the residue of an aliphatic polyether having a molecular weight of from 800 to 3500,n=0 or 1 to 10 andm=is a number >20,the intrinsic viscosity in tetrahydrofuran being from 0.8 to 2.5 dl/g.
