Herbicidally active novel phenoxybenzoic acid derivatives of the formula ##STR1## in which R represents hydrogen, nitro or cyano,R.sup.1 represents hydrogen or alkyl andR.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are identical or different and represent hydrogen, alkyl, halogenalkyl or one equivalent of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal ion, orR.sup.2 and R.sup.3 together represent an optionally substituted alkanediyl radical.
