An aqueous alkaline cleaner and process for cleaning aluminum and tin surfaces. The aqueous alkaline cleaning solution includes(A) at least one inorganic base;(B) at least one cationic surfactant which is a quaternary ammonium compound; and(C) water.Aluminum and tin surfaces cleaned with the cleaning compositions are characterized by improved surface cleanliness and brightness.
