Disclosed is a 2-benzyloxy-4-nitro-5-substituted-acylanilide compound of the general formula I: wherein R is hydrogen or an alkyl group, each RA is an independently selected substituent and n is 0-5, and Y is a substituent group linked to the rest of the compound by a hetero atom. Also disclosed is a method for using the intermediates in manufacture of dye-forming couplers.
