A carbonaceous negative electrode material for nonaqueous secondary batteries having (i) not less than 2×10−4 cc/g of pores having a diameter of smaller than 8 Å and (ii) not more than 15×10−4 cc/g of pores having a diameter of 8 to 18 Å. The material exhibits a high capacity and a high efficiency.
