The main layer comprises a nitride, carbide or carbonitride or a multilayer of nitride, carbide or carbonitride material. The main layer can be deposited on the workpiece either directly or via an interjecting adhesion layer, which can be an aforementioned transition metal or metal nitride, preferably AlCr, AlTi, Cr, Ti, AlCrN, AlTiN, TiN or CrN.
