The liquid crystal composition having a nematic phase includes a three-ring compound having a specific difluoromethyleneoxy bond having large dielectric anisotropy as a first component, a specific three-ring compound having large dielectric anisotropy as a second component, a specific four-ring compound having high maximum temperature as a third component, and a specific two-ring compound having high maximum temperature and small viscosity as a fourth component, and the liquid crystal display device contains this composition.
