The apparatus may be employed in a self standing rack (20, 120) or as a surface-mounted system (150, 190), and inlcudes at least one pair of U-shaped or J-shaped arms (40, 48, 50, 146, 148, 150) spaced apart from one another and in a generally equivalent horizontal position. At least one flexible support (60, 160) is suspended between opposing ends of each arm to provide at least lateral support to the sporting equipment stored thereon without contacting the arms.
