Abstract:
A cranio-maxillofacial implant material that is made of a macroporous (14, greater than 100 microns in diameter) interconnecting porous (14) polyethylene (12) structure with bioactive glass particles (15) dispersed throughout the porous (12) polyethylene (14) structure, is disclosed. The Implant provides augmentation or replacement of cranio-maxillofacial tissues when implanted subperiosteally or within cranio-maxillofacial soft tissue. The addition of the bioactive glass particles (15) to the porous (14) polyethylene (12) implant structure provides for faster fibrovascular ingrowth into the implant material.
