An organic electroluminescent device whose light -emitting layer contains an anthracene derivative represented by the general formula (1) as the host and at least one member selected from among perylene derivatives, borane derivatives, coumarin derivatives, pyran derivatives, iridium complexes, and platinum complexes as the dopant and which exhibits high efficiency, long service life, low driving voltage, and high durability both in storage and in driving: (1) wherein R to R and R are each independently hydrogen or C1-12 alkyl; R to R are each independently hydrogen, C1-12 alkyl, C3-12 cycloalkyl, or C6-12 aryl; Ar is nonfused aryl represented by the general formula (3); and m is an integer of 1 to 3: (3) [wherein n is an integer of 0 to 5; R to R are each independently hydrogen, C1-12 alkyl, or C6-12 aryl].
