A method for splitting signals, an optical pickup unit, and a recording/reproducing apparatus are disclosed. The method of splitting signals includes splitting polarized light into at least one part using a difference in divergence angles from either a recording medium or a near field lens, the polarized light not passing a separation/combination unit but being reflected from the separation/combination unit, the separation/combination unit passing or reflecting the polarized light following a polarized way of reflected light from a recording medium, and generating a Gap Error Signal (GES) corresponding to the at least one part of the polarized light.
