The present invention relates to a pipe coupling (10) of the type where a pipe (12) is freely insertable into the coupling (14) and where a nut (44) causes engagement of a grip ring (38) and gasket (28) with the pipe (12) to provide a seal between the coupling (14) and the pipe (12) , and where within the coupling (14) there is disposed a stop (16) to indicate to a user inserting the pipe (12) freely that the pipe (12) has been inserted to its required location. The stop (16) is located at a position where there is room beyond the stop (16) for the pipe (12) to move into. Tightening of the nut (44) causes the pipe (12) to move further into the coupling beyond the stop(16) . This solves the problem of the pipe being inserted too deeply into the coupling and being deformed when the nut (44) is tightened further.

A coupling assembly (10) for plastic pipes (12) including a nut (14), a body (20), a grip-ring (16) and a seal (18). The nut (14) can engage the body (20) through appropriate threads (28) and includes a hooked projection (36) having a sloping surface (46) adapted to abut against and provide a force on a corresponding surface (48) of the grip ring (16) within the body (20). A pipe (12) is inserted through the nut (14), grip-ring (16) and seal (18) into the body (20). Tightening of the nut (14) causes its sloped surface (46) to engage and the grip ring (16) to be forced both radially and longitudinally. Radial compression results in the grip-ring (16) engaging the pipe (12) whilst longitudinal force causes it to be forced into the body (20) simultaneously abutting against and compressing the seal (18) whilst dragging the pipe (12) further into the body (20). The nut (14) and the body (20) may further have tapered surfaces (46) that are brought together as the grip ring (14) is forced into the body (20). The physical connection between the body (20) and the nut (14) provides reinforcing for the nut (14), a feature especially useful when dealing with soft plastics. Further features include a lip (70) on the grip ring (16) that provides an additional support for the grip ring (16) when compressed as well as an abutment shoulder (56) on the nut (14) preventing the grip ring (16) from being pulled out of the body (20).

The two shells have opposed sealing surfaces and a flow passage extends through the shells and the frame. An annular collet or gripping member radially located within a coupling assembly of the type having a hollow body, nut and an O-ring or seal for connection of a pipe thereto. The collet is axially split, the split defined by first and second generally parallel ends that are of an engageable configuration, typically by one end having a projection and the other end a correspondingly shaped cavity enabling the ends to interlock. In normal operation of the coupling the collet exerts a longitudinal force on the O-ring causing a seal. When it experiences an axial force that would normally relatively displace the two ends causing a leak, being engaged to each other this movement is resisted ensuring that the seal is maintained. The present invention also relates to a coupling having such a collet.

A coupling (10) for the connection of a plastic or metal pipe (12) includes a hollow body (14) with an external thread (16) and a tapered inner surface (24). A nut (20) engages the body external thread (16), having at one end an internal thread (22) co-operable witch said body external thread (16) and at the other en an outwardly converging inner tapered surface (40). The coupling (10) includes a deformable gripping member assembly having housing (32) with an outwardly converging outer surface (42), the housing holding a metal band (34) having a plurality of radially inward projections (36) circumferentially disposed in at least one row. Typically the housing (32) is a split-ring type housing and holds the metal band (34) in a snap-fit type arrangement. Upon tightening of the nut (20), said nut inner tapered surface (40) abuts against and exerts a force on said gripping members outer surface (42) both in the longitudinal and radial directions to thereby cause the gripping member assembly to be urged both radially and longitudinally and thereby fixedly retain said pipe (12). The metal band projections ensure that the coupling can be used to retain both plastic and metal pipes. The metal projections are preferably burst-type holes having walls whose orientation is not parallel to the longitudinal or axial orientation of the coupling.

A coupling for engagement with the outer surface of a polymeric pipe, having a sub-assembly of a compression sleeve (24), a resilient gasket ring (18) permanently attached to the inner end of the compression sleeve (24), a gripping member (25), and a nut (30). The gasket ring (18) encounters an abutment in a socket (17) in the body (12) as the nut (30) is tightened, and further tightening of the nut (30) radially compresses the gripping member (25) so that its inwardly directed barbed projections (26) engage the outer surface of a pipe (11) to which the coupling is attached. The end of pipe (11) is freely insertable through the gripping member (25) and sleeve (24), and into the socket (17) in the body (12). There are also provided abutment surfaces within the body of the coupling and the nut which abut inner and outer surfaces (34, 35) of a flange outstanding from the outer end of the compression sleeve (24). Also disclosed is an embodiment with a transition spigot (46) having a barbed tail inserted into an end of a pipe enabling the coupling to accommodate a range of similar but different diameter pipes.
