A method is described for producing nuclear fuel products, the method comprising receiving metallic or intermetallic uranium-based fuel particle cores, providing at least one physical vapour deposited coating layer surrounding the fuel particle core and embedding the nuclear fuel particles in a matrix so as to form a powder mixture of matrix material and coated fuel particles. The at least one physical vapour deposited coating layer may comprise inhibitors of inhibiting, stabilizing and/or reducing interaction between metallic or intermetallic uranium-based fuel particles cores and the matrix wherein the fuel particles typically may be embedded. Alternatively or in addition thereto the deposited coating layer may comprise neutron poisons. The present invention also relates to coated fuel particles, fuel elements and the use of fuel particles for generating neutrons.

A radionuclide separating system for separating a daughter radionuclide from a parent radionuclide, the radionuclide separating system comprising: an inlet for loading a liquid solution comprising the parent radionuclide onto a column (10); the column (10) comprising a sorbent material wherein the sorbent material is capable of interacting with the parent radionuclide and daughter radionuclide so as to allow selective desorption of the parent radionuclide and/or the daughter radionuclide at a different moment in time; and an outlet for selectively obtaining said daughter radionuclide based on said selective desorption of the parent radionuclide and the daughter radionuclide, wherein the sorbent material is a carbon-based sorbent material.

The contamination of parts of the food chain such as soils, water supplies and animal fodder with radiocaesium has long been a topic of concern. Methods of fixing radiocaesium are described which include the use of a 2-1 layer phyllosilicate which is at least partly exchanged with potassium, caesium, rubidium or ammonium. The partly exchanged 2-1 layer phyllosilicate may be contacted with soil and then the mixture subjected to a series of wetting and drying cycles. The transfer factor of radiocaesium to growing plants is significantly reduced by the application of the partly exchanged 2-1 layer phyllosilicate to soils independent of whether the soils have a low cation exchange capacity (e.g. podzolic or sandy soils) or include a higher loading of organic material. . Methods of soil and water supply treatment are described. The compositions and methods of the present invention may provide an unexpectedly high and industrially useful radiocaesium sorption selectivity

Accumulation of nitrous acid is avoided and/or production of nitrogen oxides is suppressed during an electrolytic reduction of an aqueous electrolyte containing nitric acid, and optionally organic matter to be decomposed, by adding an efficient amount of a substance reactive with nitrous acid to the catholyte in such a way that the nitrous acid formed at the cathode is entirely oxidized there to nitric acid. This method can be performed in an apparatus comprising a first container for storing and feeding an oxidable species such as an organic matter, a second container for storing and feeding a nitric acid aqueous solution and further comprising an electrolyser having an anode compartment connected to the first container and a cathode compartment connected to the second container through a nitric acid aqueous solution feeding circuit, said anode compartment and said cathode compartment being separated by a membrane, and further comprising a device for providing a mixture of water and of a substance reactive with nitrous acid and a means for injecting the said mixture into the nitric acid aqueous solution feeding circuit before said nitric acid aqueous solution enters the cathode compartment.

An adaptive fuzzy controller for use with a controlled system and for controlling a first object of the controlled system in accordance with a system control parameter is described; whereby the fuzzy controller comprises: a fuzzy rule base (105) including control rules for performing a fuzzy inference operation; and an adaptive unit for adaptively changing a parameter relating to one of the control rules of the fuzzy controller in accordance with a multi-dimensional performance table having at least three dimensions, the inputs for the table being an error in the system control parameter, the rate of the change of the error in the system control parameter and a value related to a state of the controlled system or a value related to a state of an object in the controlled system. Also methods of operating the controller are described, in particular its use in a control system for a nuclear reactor. A simulator is described for testing the controller.
