The fuel injection pump comprises a plurality of unit pumps (18) each mounted in a housing bore (14). Each unit pump (18) includes a substantially cylindrical injection barrel (20) having an outlet valve assembly (24) installed in its upper end. The injection barrel (20) includes an upper annular seat (50) and a lower annular seat (52) in its external surface. Annular seals (59) and (56) of resilient material are positioned in the seats (50, 52). Each housing bore (14) has a lower chamber (66) provided for engagement with lower annular seal (56) and an upper chamber (69) provided for engagement with the upper annular seal (59). Above chamber (66) the diameter of bore (14) is always greater than the diameter of seal (56) when uncompressed and above chamber (67) the diameter of bore (14) is always greater than the diameter of seal (59) when uncompressed.

The fuel injection pump (10) comprises a pump housing (12) in which is disposed a plurality of unit pumps (14) having each a pump piston (18) angularly adjustable by means of a longitudinally reciprocable fuel rack (22) for altering the effective delivery stroke. Each of a pair of lever arms (32) and (34) is pivotally mounted for rotation relative to pump housing (12) about a respective primary axis defined by respective pivot pins (36) and (38). The lever arms (32, 34) are each pivotally connected to the rack (22) at respective secondary pivot axes defined by pivot pins (40,42) to allow relative pivotal motion therebetween. One lever arm (32) has a portion (32a) extending from its primary pivot axis in a direction substantially opposite from that of the secondary pivot axis. Actuating force is applied to that portion (32a) of lever arms to reciprocate the rack (22) via pivotal motion of the lever arms (32, 34) rather than requiring linear sliding motion.

A pair of wedge shims (70a, 70b) are installed between the head flange portion (31) of barrel (20) and an upper surface of pump housing (12). For adjusting the axial positioning of the injection barrel the wedge shims are adjustable with respect to one another in a direction normal to the vertical axis of the injection barrel (20).
