A rectangular baler is disclosed comprising a bale case (6) into which successive charges of crop material are introduced; plunger means (7) disposed for reciprocating movement in the bale case (6) to thereby compact said charges while advancing said compacted charges toward an exit opening therein; and knotter means (8) for tying a flexible binding material, such as twine, in a form-stabilising manner around successive increments of compacted crop material while they advance in the bale case (6) to form bales. The baler further comprises an elongated sensor (48) disposed on the knotter means (8) in the trajectory of the flexible material (49) projecting from a twine holder (32) towards a billhook (33); said sensor (48) being operable to detect the tensile forces occurring in the binding material during bale formation and to produce signals representative thereof, which are processed by a micro-processor (24) to, if found necessary, lower the density of the bales in order to avoid twine failure.

A compressor roll assembly (41) for a forage harvester comprises a set of closely adjacent, cooperating compressor rolls (44), operable to crack maize kernels in the crop material with their a substantially cylindric crop-engaging surfaces (45), which are composed by a plurality of exchangeable surface elements (60,63). The rolls (44) are installed within a frame (42) and their shafts (73, 74) are journalled in bearing housings (78-81) which lie outside said frame (42). The mounting of these housings (78-81) permits the removal of a complete roll (44), whereafter direct access is given to the bolt means (70) for replacement of any of the elements (60, 63), without any need for prior disassembly of the bearing housings (78-81) from the compressor roll (44).
