A method of selectively controlling the self-sealing ability of a tire obtained by application of a sealing assembly on a drum and subsequent formation thereon of a precursor of a green tire inclusive of liner and carcass, followed by shaping, curing and molding. The sealing assembly includes: a self-supporting thermoplastic film of polyamide or polyester and a layer of sealing material possessing viscoelasticity and stickiness features, which is associated with and supported by the self-supporting thermoplastic film. The sealing assembly is easily puncturable by a sharp-pointed element while it maintains such a deformability and stickiness that it helps in the transfer of the sealing material during ejection of the sharp-pointed element and limits the transferred material amount to such an extent that holes bigger than a predetermined value are not sealed.

Each looping drum has a longitudinal axis thereof, with respect to which it is radially expandable/contractible in a manner so as to turn up the loop around an anchoring annular structure. The apparatus also includes a loop deposit station, a loading station configured for loading the anchoring annular structures on the looping drum and an unloading station configured for unloading the looped anchoring annular structures from the looping drum. The loop deposit station, loading station and unloading station are angularly offset from each other. A turret transfer apparatus supports the looping drums in positions angularly offset with respect to each other and is configured for transferring the looping drums between the loop deposit station, the loading station and the unloading station rotating around a vertically-arranged transfer axis.

The building of the carcass structure comprises arranging a pair of support members (60) in a first operative position in which each support member (60) is axially adjacent to a respective axial end portion (50a) of the forming support (50). In particular, in the aforementioned first operative position the support members (60) are coupled with respective gripping members (40) disengaged from said forming support (50) and arranged on axially opposite sides with respect to the forming support (50). The gripping members (40) are rotatable about the rotation axis (X-X) and have a rotation speed synchronised with that of the forming support (50).

The invention relates to a process for building self-sealing tyres for vehicle wheels, wherein a continuous sealing assembly (12) comprising a self-supporting thermoplastic film (11) and a layer of sealing polymeric material (10) associated with and supported by said self-supporting thermoplastic film (11) is cut to size and wound up around a forming drum (14). Components of a green tyre (1) are subsequently formed on the forming drum (14). The tyre is then shaped, moulded and cured. The cutting of the continuous sealing assembly (12) to size comprises: moving a cutting blade (25) heated to a temperature "T" at a speed "V" along a cutting path (C) transverse to the longitudinal extension of the continuous sealing assembly (12), in which the speed "V" and/or the temperature "T" are varied along the mentioned path (C). The invention relates also to an apparatus for building self-sealing tyres for vehicle tyres.
