The invention is directed to a process for producing at least one naphthenic base oil from a hydrocarbon feed containing heteroatom species and aromatics, comprising the steps of: a) hydrotreating the feed under hydrotreating conditions effective for removing at least a portion of the heteroatom species and saturating at least a portion of the aromatics to produce a first stage effluent having a reduced amount of heteroatom species; and b) removing gaseous and liquid fractions boiling in the gas oil range from the effluent from step (a), and c) dewaxing the effluent obtained in step (b) under catalytic dewaxing conditions in the presence of a catalyst composition comprising a molecular sieve containing covalently bound alumina moieties in its framework and having pores with a diameter in the range of from 0.35 to 0.80 nm, wherein the molecular sieve has been modified to reduce the mole percentage of alumina, to produce at least one effluent, and d) fractionating the effluent obtained in step(c) to produce at least one naphthenic base oil grade.

a) preparing an aqueous mixture comprising a silicon source and an organic template at a temperature in the range of at most 90 °C; (b) adjusting the pH of the solution to such value in the range of from 5.0 to 12.5 that a precipitate is formed; (c) recovering the precipitate; and (d) calcination of the precipitate to obtain the mesoporous, crystalline, acidic molecular sieve, wherein an aluminium source is added in one or more of steps (a) and (b) and/or between steps (c) and (d) in such amount that after addition of all aluminium source the Si/Al atomic ratio is at least 3; molecular sieves obtained by the process; and their use as hydroprocessing catalysts or catalyst carriers.
