Spectrally matched color outputs are obtained using data from a real-time sensor, such as, for example, a spectrophotometer on the output trays of a marking devices to determine the output spectra of a reproduced image. The output spectra of the reproduced image is compared with an output spectra of a target spectra stored in a computer memory to produce a mapping table that will spectrally match all subsequently reproduced color images in real-time. Thus, output color spectra are matched between displays and prints, scans and prints, scans and displays, or copies and prints.

A compensator responds to the sensor signal to provide a non-linear adjustment signal and the look up table (110) converts the non-linear adjustment signal to a linear adjustment signal. A device such as a charging corotron or developer power supply responds to the linear adjustment signal to appropriately adjust the operating component.

The system comprises a front end converter for converting an input signal representative of a target image comprising a preselected color into a device-dependent control signal in accordance with a device TRC, a color marking device for outputting an output image in response to the control signal, a sensor for measuring a parameter from the output image representative of a color of the output image, and, a point-wise controller for comparing the parameter with a corresponding parameter from the target image and constructing adjusted controlled points for the device TRC when the measured parameter and the corresponding parameter vary by a preselected value, a color balance controller for constructing an adjusted device TRC from the controlled points, whereby subsequently generated output images are output with the adjusted device TRC and, more accurately represent target input images.

Parameter adjustment is computed based upon a measured error signal detected between a sensed signal detected from actual device output and with an insitu sensor, and the analytical model output. The adjustment algorithm is recursively executed until parameter convergence effects a minimal error measurement, at which time the updated parameters are identified as accurate within the selected parametric model.

The imaging machine is calibrated by providing an image on a first copy sheet and conveying the first copy sheet to the input scanner by means of the copy path (88). The image on the first copy sheet is scanned and provides the image on a second copy sheet. The image on the second copy sheet is sensed and compared to a reference image to calibrate the imaging machine. A controller (12) is operative, in response to the sensing, to activate a diverter (100) to divert imaged sheet between a normal output tray (78) and the copy sheet path (88).

A method and apparatus for using feedback and feedforward in generating predictable reproducible and pleasing images in a distributed digital image processing system (1000) monitors presentation images and provides feedback to a customer that assembled the original image. The originating customer can view the image as it appears on a remote output device (600-800) and/or adjust the image so that the presentation image will match the image appearing on the image originating device (100). The system can also automatically adjust the digital images as they are processed by the system to insure that a remotely outputted presentation image matches the original image on the image originating device or on a local output device proximal with the image originating device.
