A method and apparatus for using feedback and feedforward in generating predictable reproducible and pleasing images in a distributed digital image processing system (1000) monitors presentation images and provides feedback to a customer that assembled the original image. The originating customer can view the image as it appears on a remote output device (600-800) and/or adjust the image so that the presentation image will match the image appearing on the image originating device (100). The system can also automatically adjust the digital images as they are processed by the system to insure that a remotely outputted presentation image matches the original image on the image originating device or on a local output device proximal with the image originating device.

Described herein is a method and apparatus for consistently rotating high addressability bitmap images to be rendered on a printing system. A first step encodes the high addressability image to produce a regular bitmap array and then rotates the regular array. A compact dot growth operation is applied to assure that exposure pulses for any gray pixels are consistently positioned to provide a consistent output which is independent of the rotation direction.

The exposed areas of the photoreceptor (36) form a latent image, controlled by the processor (20), of areas of varied exposure based on surrounding pixels. The processor (20) examines the pixels (14) to determine an image structure beneficially adaptable to varied exposure and selects a pixel for varied exposure, such as increased or decreased exposure or altered timing to apply the pixel.

A light collector (100) for collecting light reflected from a photoconductive surface bearing a developed image and scanned by a flying spot scanner. The collector comprises a rod-like element (102), the central core (104) of which is comprised of a relatively rigid transparent material. The core is encased by a cladding material (106) having an index of refraction lower than that of the core. A light diffusing coating (110) is provided on the outer surface of the cladding material, except for a slit-like aperture (108) for receiving light reflected from the photoconductive surface. In an alternative embodiment, the dimension of the light receiving aperture is varied uniformly along the length of the collector, the size of the aperture at the collector center being at a minimum. In a further embodiment, a slit-like axial section of the cladding material opposite the light receiving aperture is removed and replaced by a highly reflecting, light diffusing coating.
