In a tractor/baler combination, a method of controlling the combination includes the steps of:
(i) advancing a tractor/baler combination through a swath or windrow of biological matter with the tractor PTO operating at a generally constant speed to power the baler and the baler operating to take up biological matter; (ii)during step (i) assessing the flowrate of biological matter in the baler; (iii) comparing the assessed flowrate with an optimal flowrate; and (iv) if the assessed flowrate differs from the optimal flowrate by more than a predetermined amount, changing the speed of advancement of the tractor/baler combination, and hence changing the flowrate of biological matter in the baler.
There is also disclosed an apparatus (10) for carrying out the method of the invention. The method and apparatus of the invention advantageously increase the workrate of baling operations.

The baler (10) which performs the method includes a bale chamber (16) having a forward inlet end. Mounted forwardly of the bale chamber are conveying means (26) which may include a crop pickup (76). Feeding means (28) are disposed between the conveying means and the inlet end of the bale chamber, the feeding means simultaneously engaging opposed surfaces of a rearwardly conveyed mat of crop material while alternately feeding opposed surfaces of the mat in a rearward direction to a location adjacent the inlet end of the bale chamber. Moving means (46) are provided to move the fed mat of crop material back and forth across the inlet end of the bale chamber to form successive layers of folded crop material within the bale chamber. The feeding means includes a pair of parallel rollers (32) on which saw tooth like feed elements (40) are supported, the elements being so arranged that they more aggressively feed the mat when moved in a direction towards the inlet end of the bale chamber (16) than when moved away from the inlet end. The rollers are carried by common supports (48), and the moving means, which may be hydraulic cylinders (50), move the common supports and the rollers back and forth across the inlet end of the bale chamber.

The baler comprises a pick-up assembly configured to pick-up crop material; a compression assembly comprising at least one pair of opposing compression rollers configured to generate a pressure on the crop material as it passes between the compression rollers; and a bale chamber, wherein the pre-compressed crop forms a bale. The compression rollers define an adjustable gap therebetween. By adjusting the gap, pressure exerted on the crop material as it passes between the compression rollers may be controlled, resulting in bales of varying density.
