The present disclosure generally relates to cyclonic separation or filtering of nanoparticles suspended in a gas. A plume of liquid droplets may be generated using an ultrasound or other generator. The gas may be mixed with the plume of liquid droplets, which may have received an electrostatic charge prior to mixing, to promote preferential adhesion of the nanoparticles to the liquid droplets. The gas with suspended nanoparticles and suspended liquid particles may flow through a cyclonic separator that spins rapidly, causing the cleaned gas to flow out of the filter while the liquid with adhered nanoparticles may be discharged, collected, and/or re-used in the plume generator. By causing nanoparticles to adhere to larger liquid particles, the filter may allow the filtering and collection of much smaller particles than current systems may filter under atmospheric pressure.

The invention concerns a method and an apparatus for purifying combustion gases, especially combustion gases exhausted from maritime diesel engines and combustion gases produced by power plants situated near the seaside, of impurities contained in the combustion gases. The apparatus comprises a scrubber device ( 10 ) for scrubbing the combustion gases and a droplet separator device ( 20 ) for separating scrubbing liquid droplets from the outflowing purified combustion gas flow (D). The scrubber device ( 10 ) comprises an inflow duct ( 13 ) for conveying an overpressurised combustion gas flow (A) containing impurities into the scrubber device ( 10 ) and means ( 16,17,18 ) for passing seawater used as scrubbing liquid into the scrubber device ( 10 ). At least the scrubbing liquid flowing out of the scrubber device ( 10 ) has been fitted to flow into the flotation device ( 30 ) for the separation of soot particles, oil and other possible solid impurity particles contained in the scrubbing liquid from the scrubbing liquid.

The atomizer comprises an atomizing chamber and an atomizing mechanism; the atomizing chamber includes an inlet for the dust gas and an outlet for the gas after mixture; the atomizing mechanism comprises a water chamber, the first atomizing ball, the second atomizing ball, an umbrella-shaped atomizer, and a regulating mechanism; the water chamber includes the first and second water inlet and the first and second water outlet; the regulating mechanism adjusts the fit clearance between the first atomizing ball and the first water outlet, the fit clearance between the second atomizing ball and the second water outlet, and the flare angle of the umbrella surface of the umbrella-shaped atomizer. The preferred advantageous effect is: the two-stage atomization - coordinating the atomizing balls and the water outlets, and using an umbrella-shaped atomizer - guarantees the atomizing effect. When there are burrs accumulating in the water outlets, regulate the fit clearances between the atomizing balls and the water outlets to remove completely the influence of the blockage on the atomizing effect. And when there are burrs corroding the water outlets, regulate the fit clearances between the atomizing balls and the water outlets to remove completely the influence of the corrosion on the atomizing effect.

In one embodiment, a separation chamber (100) receives a fluid mixture (22) of exhaust gas (16) and liquid coolant (10) and a dynamic separation member (e.g., 106 or 116) separates the exhaust gas (16) from the liquid coolant (10). In one aspect of the invention, a horizontal axial-flow silencer includes a separation plate, having at least one dynamic separator, horizontally positioned in the separation chamber (100). A dam (130) maintains the free surface of the fluid mixture (22) at or slightly above the separation plate at an engine speed within nominal operating range, and provides for the continuing passage of exhaust gas (16) through the liquid coolant (10). The separation plate employs inertial effects introduced by a series of vanes (107) that deflect the gas-coolant mixture upstream to separate the coolant with a greater inertia from the exhaust gas (16) with a lesser inertia. Alternatively, the separation plate may consist of a mesh pad (116) that employs frictional effects to achieve a similar result. The separate exhaust gas (110) is passed through a resonator tube or tubes (150) to further attenuate the acoustic energy of the gas.
