The invention relates to charged-particle segmented strip detectors, in which the strips comprise one or more scintillating fibers and the fibers are arranged in the form of a strip and are folded onto themselves so as to form a loop with a bending radius which is ≤100 times the diameter or the side size, in the case of square cross-sections, and the strip is folded so that its end portions form an angle 0≤α≤90° beyond the curvature, said end portions being superimposed in the case where the angle is α ≠ 0 or parallel and spaced in the case where α = 0. These detectors may be one-dimensional or two-dimensional position detectors or tracking detectors and may be combined with residual range detectors. The invention also relates to compression of the number of read-out channels of these detectors obtained by means of suitable grouping of the fibers at the two read-out ends thereof, obtaining a compression factor equal to 2·√ N , where N = the number of read-out channels of the fibers, in quadruple coincidence. The detectors according to the invention are applicable to apparatus for radiography or tomography using charged particles.

Provided are sensors and methods for detecting thermal neutrons. Provided is an apparatus having a scintillator for absorbing a neutron, the scintillator having a back side for discharging a scintillation light of a first wavelength in response to the absorbed neutron, an array of wavelength-shifting fibers proximate to the back side of the scintillator for shifting the scintillation light of the first wavelength to light of a second wavelength, the wavelength-shifting fibers being disposed in a two-dimensional pattern and defining a plurality of scattering plane pixels where the wavelength-shifting fibers overlap, a plurality of photomultiplier tubes, in coded optical communication with the wavelength-shifting fibers, for converting the light of the second wavelength to an electronic signal, and a processor for processing the electronic signal to identify one of the plurality of scattering plane pixels as indicative of a position within the scintillator where the neutron was absorbed.

A detector for detecting ionising radiation comprises a scintillator (10) selected to emit light in response to incidence thereon of radiation to be detected, at least one detector (16) for detecting said emitted light, and at least one optical waveguide (12) for transmitting said emitted light to said detector (16). The optical waveguide typically comprises a flexible solid or hollow fibre that can be incorporated into a flexible mat or into a fibre-reinforced structure, so that the detector is integrated therewith.

A radiation detector for detecting radiation comprises a scintillator (1), a first light guide (2), a plurality of second light guides (3) and a photo detector (4). The scintillator (1) generates a scintillated light in response to received radiation. The first light guide (2), which is connected to the scintillator, has a fluorescence characteristic. The second light guide (3) has a common surface arranged at the opposite side of the surface of the scintillator where radiation is received, and the second light guide (3) has a fluorescence characteristic. The photo detector (4) is connected to the first light guide (2) and the second light guide (3), and detects a fluorescent light therein.
